The upper reaches of the Li River are the Da Rong River, and the lower reaches are the traditional name Gui River. The Lingqu River mouth is the boundary point between the Guijiang Darong River section and the Lijiang River section, while the Lipu River and Gongcheng River mouths are the boundary points between the Lijiang River section and the Guijiang River section. The Li River section flows through Xing'an, Lingchuan, Guilin, Yangshuo, Pingle and other places, with a total length of 164 kilometers. The riverbeds along the river are mostly composed of water quality pebbles, with small sediment content and clear water quality. The two banks are mostly karst landforms. Rich in tourism resources, the famous Guilin landscape is located on the Li River.
The Li River was once an important waterway for communication between Lingnan and the Central Plains, playing a crucial role in national unity and economic and cultural exchange. After the 1930s, the status and role of Lijiang River shipping gradually replaced by highways and railways.
In 2013, the Li River was selected as one of the "15 Most Worth Visiting Rivers in the World". In 2014, the Li River was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
